Determination and realization of nonwetting surface coatings with optimum roughness for precision optics
Abstract
Water and dust repellent coatings for precision optics need higher performance concerning coverage and homogeneity than coatings for example on vehicle windshields. For the latter highly nonwetted surfaces are obtained by micrometer-sized and/or nanometer-sized structures of nonwetted materials. This effect is well known since 1930, and recently regained high interest as ”Lotus effect”. For precision optics however nonwetted coatings will consist of nonwetted molecular films, with an optimum roughness. This means that scattering loss and contact angle hysteresis are both minimized.
