Nanocomposite TiN/Si3N4 coatings produced by arc PVD
Abstract
Nanocomposite coatings, consisting of nanocrystalline TiN embedded in an amorphous matrix of Si3N4 providing outstanding hardness and high oxidation resistance, shall be developed for use in high load – high temperature applications such as extrusion devices and die casting molds.
This project aims at developing commercially available nanocomposite TiN/Si3N4 coatings with improved lifetime using arc-PVD. A significant part of the project is devoted to compare the deposition methods arc-PVD and UBM-PVD for nanocomposite TiN/Si3N4. Applicability of this type of coatings to plastic injection molding will be examined.
