6377.1:
Clay minerals intercalated by nanometer-scale aluminum hydroxide monolayers with heavy metal cations
Abstract
The following questions will be addressed:
(1) How fast does the new solid Ni Al hydroxy montmorillonite dissolve in acidic solutions?
(2) Is the dissolution of this mineral occurring congruently or incongruently?
(Slow and congruent dissolution are useful features of minerals for technical applications.)
(3) Is the Al-modified montmorillonite forming the same kind of minerals with Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+
as it does with Ni2+ ?
If so then the Al-modified montmorillonite has a high potential for capturing small heavy metal cations
in waste water, soil and landfills.
