5595.1:
Nanostructured chips for the analysis of individual membrane proteins (Application for additional funding)

Abstract

The aim of this feasibility study is to design and produce partially transparent chips which will serve as a support for lipid bilayers. The chip will enable light microscopic investigations as well as nanoscopic (SPM)-techniques at whole biological cells or fragments thereof and thus will be a versatile tool for observing and understanding biological processes on the molecular level. The unique features are the regularly arranged clusters of nanosized openings with diameters from 100 to 400 nm allowing mass transport through the protein assemblies present in the membrane.
