Silica-Tantalum and Silica-Ytterbium oxide nanoparticles by flame spray pyrolysis for dental nanocomposites

Abstract

Synthesis of silica-based mixed Ta- and Yb-oxides for dental nanocomposites is carried out by a novel flame spray aerosol process. A variety of different precursors is used to produce tailor-made functional particles of various compositions and particle sizes that will be systematically evaluated by Ivoclar-Vivadentas dental micro/nanofillers with enhanced optical and mechanical properties. Few selected compositions of these particles will be made at the ETHZ pilot plant in Schlieren similar to a vapor flame process producing 700 g/h of silica nanoparticles today.
