REsonant FIlter Nanostructured Elements for Optical Communications

Abstract

The REFINE project will investigate the design and the feasibility of nanostructured, optical Resonant Filters for applications in optical communications (Telecom, Datacom), for example in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). Resonant Filters represent a new and very promising area of subwavelength optics which holds the potential of achieving new optical characteristics and performance, or existing performance with fewer layers and lower fabrication costs compared to conventional thin film optical filters. The project will investigate optical nanostructures with linewidths down to less than 100 nm, and concentrate on finding designs combining performance of commercial interest with structure which can be realistically fabricated.
