Oxidative technology on membranes/beads with immobilized nano-sized catalyst for waste-water detoxification

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop membrane, fabrics and beads supporting active catalyst intervening in Fenton like reactions related to the abatement of pollutants of the textile industry, Kölliken waste waters and chemical plants. The membranes to develop further are: 1) Nafion/(Fe, Cu, Mn) , 2) Lower cost Nafion with catalytic metals-ion dispersed on silica fabrics, 3) silica woven fabrics loaded with catalytic metal-ions and semiconductors 4) C-woven fabrics loaded with metal-ions and semiconductors. Deposits of the active catalytic species on Rashig tubes and beads intended for reactor use. These supported materials will be tested in a laboratory size reactor (1 m3/day) in the destruction of a) waste water of textile effluents where sludge formation has to be avoided (Techform Engineering AG), b) these membranes will be used to be used in conjunction with H2O2 or H2O2/O2 as oxidant during the abatement of pollutant of the chemical industry and cyanides (Elfa Oxychemie AG), and finally c) these new supported catalytic systems will be tried in the abatement of toxic the waste waters of the Sondermülldeponie Kölliken to relieve the hydraulic load due to toxic components. The aim is to improve the biological degradation in the second biological stage. This feasibility study will adapt the nature and size of the nano-cluster on the chosen supports to the specific applications of the industrial partners and to evaluate the economic viability
