6058.2:
Cellulose-nanofibrils for polymer reinforcement

Abstract

Agglomerated cellulose-nanofibrils embedded in a lignin matrix in the cell wall are the reason for the outstanding specific tensile strength of wood. The aim of the project is to seperate single nanofibrils or fibril-bundles (10-100 nm), to confirm their superior specific strength and to integrate the fibrils in a matrix (e.g. biopolymers) for the use of fiber-reinforcement. Nanofibrillary reinforced biopolymers could reach wide application as biodegradable materials with improved properties.
