Precession of a single electron spin detected by a modified scanning tunneling microscope


Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate the potential of an innovative approach to the detection of the electron spin precession (ESP) of single electrons by a modified scanning tunneling microscope (STM).
We will focus our efforts on: (a) the development of an ESP-STM instrument based on the STM of our industrial partner, (b) the detection of single electron spins at room temperature in air, (c) the understanding of the ESP-STM effect, (d) the applicability of the technique to significant problems in nano-science.
