Photocatalytic Degradation of Isothiazolinones in Emulsion Paints Containing Nanocrystalline TiO2 Pigment

Abstract

Emulsion paints use harmful isothiazolinones as preservatives. The Swiss paint manufacturers are interested to add photoactive nanocrystalline oxides in paints to selectively photodegrade such harmful substances after painting, without harming other essential ingredients. This feasibility project will study the photocatalytic activity of paint grade TiO2 and various other nano-sized oxides towards isothiazolinones in the presence of air and light, in order to develop better paints which will selectively and timely destroy the harmful substances present therein.
