5148.1:
Improving the performance of functional coatings using nanoscale phase distributions
Abstract
Nano-technologies will be the next materials revolution. Already, initial work on nano-phased materials shows that these can exhibit exceptional and sometimes surprising properties. However, the mechanisms by which nano-phase material properties differ from those of conventional materials are not yet clearly understood.
Present day demands on materials require the increasing application of coatings to enhance the life and performance of manufacturing and manufactured components. Thermal-spray coating techniques have been of particular relevance in this field. This project is a preliminary investigation of the present position and future applicability of thermal spraying of nano-powder based coatings for manufacturing industry. The state of the art for the most common coatings as well as future possibilities should be investigated. In addition, in-depth microstructural evaluation techniques should be adapted for application on nano-scale characterisation and used as a basis for developing a better understanding of the properties of the nano-phase materials.
