Corrosion aspects of the EDM process (Project of the TOP NANO 21 Innovation Committee)
Abstract
Wire Electro-Discharge Machining (W-EDM) is a very promising approach towards micro- and nanomachining. In order to improve the accuracy of the workpiece and the surface finishing a better control of the machining parameters and especially of the thermally affected zone with a thickness of several nanometers is required. Possible corrosion attack during W-EDM in water makes all these efforts useless. The present project aims at detailed mechanistic elucidation and possible diminution or inhibition of the EDM-associated corrosion processes that hamper the achievement of a smoother surface morphology with a roughness below the present limit of ca. 50 nm Ra.
