7004.1:
Supplement for Scanning Force Microscopy with Ultrasmall Cantilevers

Abstract

This Project is a supplent project for the running project 5988.1 “Scanning Force Microscopy with Ultrasmall Cantilevers”. In the project 5988.1 considerable progress has been achieved:
- ultrasmall Si cantilevers have been designed, fabricated and their mechanical properties were found to match the
theoretical estimations [patent application and publication in print].
- a first prototype AFM head for biological applications has been designed, built and successfully tested.
- an AFM for low temperature UHV application has been designed.
- a Fabry-Perot interferometer optical sensor has been designed, fabricated and first tests have been successfully
performed [patent application accepted]. The technology is presently being transferred to FISBA Optik AG.
However, the construction of the AFM heads, the fabrication of the sensor and the required ultrastable interferometer laser setup exceeds the expected costs considerable. In oder to fulfill the project goals supplementary financing is required for the construction of the instrumentation.
