Bundling of Skills on the nanometer Scale

Where fundamental research is concerned, the Swiss universities and the Federal Institutes of Technology have a leading position throughout the world. If this enormous potential for knowledge is to be realized for the benefit of the national economy, it will be necessary to bundle the fundamental skills and orient them towards expenditure.

In an initial step the individual research centers have defined their skills and grouped them into so-called "clusters" (yellow ellipses). As the second step the problems formulated by industry have been assembled under a number of headings, e.g. "Artificial Noses". Combining of these two categories has then resulted in horizontal cross-linking of the research skills oriented towards the . The blue bar in the above diagram represents the "Artificial Noses" for instance.
